For literacy, students start the year by reviewing three-letter words. Every day, a new set of words is introduced. Students work on the spelling of the words given. Students’ reading skills are emphasized through spelling tests, activities, and worksheets. From September, students study blends and digraphs. Storytelling is also introduced. After winter break, students will write their own stories and read them aloud to their peers.
For math, teachers focus on modeling, counting, and comparing numbers 1 to 10, as well as 2-digit additions. Teachers focus on representing, counting, and writing numbers 11 to 20 and beyond, as well as identifying and describing 2D and 3D shapes. The concept of measurement is also introduced.
For science, students will learn about their senses, materials, living and non-living things, and forces, to name but a few. Exciting experiments will be designed to engage the students.
At the end of Dolphins, students are able to read short stories, write words on dictation, as well as solve 2 digit addition problems, more than equipped to enter grade 1 successfully.
