Purpose
The UIA House System is designed to give students from kindergarten all the way to grade 12 and teachers a time and a space to interact with one another across divisions. The House System aims to help students, teachers, and staff promote inclusivity, celebrate diversity, gain a sense of pride, spirit, and unity with their housemates as well as developing leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
Within their houses, students will be able to participate in a variety of activities including competitions, volunteer-work, and team-building events that will allow them to become a closer and more tightly-knit community.
Aims and Objectives
- To foster and nurture healthy bonds and relations between students, teachers, staff, and the community.
- To promote horizontal and vertical interactions between students and teachers.
- To build a sense of friendly competition between the houses.
- To provide opportunities for students to serve as leaders within the school and the community.
- To develop 21st century skills in students such as collaboration, communication, and problem solving.
- To provide opportunities for community service and volunteer work.
Houses, Traits and Characteristics
Students will be divided into 1 of the 4 houses listed below:
Genbu
Suzaku
Byakko
Seiryuu
Each house is named after one of the 4 mythical creatures of the Japanese Shishin 四神 which is derived from the Chinese Sì Shòu 四獸. Each mythical creature serves as the guardian and protector of the cardinal direction it represents.
Each house holds different traits and qualities that make them unique and special. When combined, they represent the values and qualities of UIA as a whole.

Suzaku | Phoenix | South | Red | Summer | Fire | The House of Suzaku is a house of knowledge and wisdom. Students and teachers in this house are fiercely loyal and are willing to support their house and school to great extents. |
Byakko | Tiger | West | White | Autumn | Metal | The House of Byakko is a house of righteousness and justice. Students and teachers in this house are willing to protect their house and their school from negative influences and are resilient through all challenges. |
Sorting Process
All current and new students will be sorted by the Admissions Officer and all new students entering the school will be sorted into a House during the admissions process. Students will remain in their houses throughout their tenure at UIA. Each house will work towards having an equal number of boys and girls respective to their grade level and division. Students will not switch houses barring special mitigating circumstances.
Teachers and staff will be sorted by their Divisional Head. Teachers and staff will not switch houses barring special circumstances.
